Foundation Crack Guide: Which Huntsville Cracks Are Serious?

Almost every home in North Alabama develops a crack or two — it's what happens when houses sit on clay soil that swells in spring rain and shrinks in summer drought. The question isn't "do I have a crack," it's "does this crack mean trouble." Three things tell you: width, direction, and whether it's still moving.

Usually normal

• Hairline vertical cracks in poured concrete. Often just curing shrinkage from when the concrete was first poured. Worth watching, rarely urgent.
• Fine, stable drywall cracks that don't reopen after a single patch.
• Small settling cracks in a brand-new home's first year as the house settles onto its lot — though new construction in Hampton Cove and hillside cuts isn't immune to real problems.

Structural red flags — get these looked at

• Horizontal cracks in a basement or foundation wall — often a sign of soil pressure pushing the wall in.
• Stair-step cracks in brick or block, especially widening ones — a classic settlement pattern.
• Cracks wider than about 1/4 inch, or that you can slide a coin into.
• Cracks that keep coming back after you patch them — the movement behind them hasn't stopped.
• Cracks paired with sticking doors, sloping floors, or gaps at wall-to-ceiling corners.

The 30-second test

Photograph the crack with a coin next to it for scale, mark the ends with a pencil and date it, then check again in a month. If it's grown or the pencil marks have separated, it's active — call a pro. If it's dead still and hairline, it's probably fine. Or skip the month of suspense and have us look for free.

What happens if a serious crack is ignored

Structural cracks don't heal — the soil movement behind them keeps working. What's a few-hundred-dollar stabilization today can become piering or house leveling after a few more wet-dry cycles. Catching it early is the cheapest foundation decision you'll ever make.
