When that active clay moves, the pier riding in it can move too.
Driven steel push piers and helical steel piers take a different approach: steel advances down until it reaches load bearing strata or verified resistance well below the seasonal moisture zone. The house is then resting on ground that does not care whether August was dry. That depth is the entire point, and it is why steel bids run higher. When two bids are thousands apart, they are usually not bidding the same repair.
