Call (256) 342-9622Before slab-on-grade took over, Huntsville homes were built pier and beam: the house sits on brick or masonry piers, which carry wood girders, which carry the floor joists, all over a crawl space. You still find these across the older parts of town, Five Points, Twickenham, Blossomwood, and the historic districts, and they age in a specific way. Piers settle or lean as the red clay moves under them, wood girders and sill beams can rot or get eaten where the crawl space stayed damp, and the floor above starts to sag, bounce, or slope. The tells are gaps opening at the baseboards and door trim, floors that feel springy, and a crawl space that smells musty.
Pier and beam repair is different work from slab repair, and it is what we do: we shore the structure, add or rebuild piers to solid bearing, replace rotted girders and sills, sister weakened joists, and bring the floor back to level.
